Sea Stars and Touch Tanks: The Cabrillo Aquarium Visits Discovery School

Preschool children gather around a marine science educator demonstrating aquatic life in a clear tank beside a colorful Cabrillo Marine Aquarium outreach van, listening attentively during an outdoor educational activity.

Last week, our campus had a very special visit from the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium. Educators from Cabrillo arrived with a touch tank, sea stars, and a full program designed to bring ocean life directly to our children.

Our children were wide-eyed from the moment the program began. They got to hear about ocean habitats, learn what different sea creatures eat, and discover how marine animals protect themselves. Then came the touch tank, and the wonder in the room was something to see.

Feeling the texture of a sea star, watching it move slowly across a surface, understanding that it is a real living creature from the ocean floor: these are the kinds of experiences that stay with children. Not because they were told about it, but because they felt it with their own hands.

Visits like this are a natural fit for Discovery School. We are a place that believes deeply in hands-on, exploratory learning. Our farm, our nature-rich campus, and programs like this Cabrillo visit give children regular access to the natural world and all the curiosity it sparks.

Thank you to the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium team for bringing the ocean to Tarzana today. Our children are still talking about the sea stars.
